Geopolitics and Security Alliances

Xi Jinping's PLA purges may weaken military effectiveness and regional stability.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s increasing control over the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is manifesting through significant purges, particularly within the Rocket Force, with the recent dismissal of nine top generals highlighting efforts to combat corruption and reinforce loyalty. While these internal upheavals may provide India with a temporary advantage along the Line of Actual Control by potentially limiting PLA assertiveness, they also expose critical vulnerabilities in China’s military modernization efforts. This consolidation of power, however, risks creating a more ideologically rigid and less competent military force, which could pose long-term threats to regional stability and India’s national security interests, as the prioritization of political reliability over operational effectiveness may lead to paranoia and decreased transparency within the PLA.
