Pakistan's CJCSC Gen Shamshad Mirza retires amid military restructuring.
General Sahir Shamshad Mirza has retired as Pakistan’s Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, coinciding with the enactment of the 27th Constitutional Amendment that introduces the position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who was appointed in 2024 for a three-year term, will hold this newly created position, allowing him to remain in office until 2030. The CJCSC role, originally designed to enhance military synergy post-1971 war, proved ineffective as real power remained concentrated with the army chief. This structural change reflects the ongoing dominance of the military in Pakistan’s governance and security policy, with potential implications for regional stability, particularly concerning India.
