Indian Type 214 Subs to Enhance Stealth Against China-Pak ASW Threats
The Indian Navy is poised to enhance its underwater capabilities with the acquisition of six advanced Type 214 diesel-electric submarines from Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, a move approved under the Project 75I programme. These submarines feature innovative “diamond” hull designs that utilize “facet stealth” principles, significantly improving acoustic invisibility against anti-submarine warfare assets from China and Pakistan. A critical aspect of the Type 214’s stealth is its non-magnetic steel construction, which counters detection by Magnetic Anomaly Detectors. Additionally, the submarines will be equipped with advanced Air-Independent Propulsion systems, allowing for extended underwater operations. This acquisition aligns with India’s strategic objectives in the Indian Ocean Region, significantly bolstering its maritime defense capabilities amidst increasing regional threats.
