Japan to deploy missiles on Yonaguni Island to counter regional tensions.

Japan has reaffirmed its plans to deploy medium-range Type 03 CHU surface-to-air missile systems on Yonaguni Island, its westernmost territory close to Taiwan, as part of a military buildup aimed at countering China’s expanding military influence and ensuring stability in the Taiwan Strait. This initiative, described by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi as a defensive measure, has garnered support from Taiwan, emphasizing mutual interests in regional security. The deployment, which is part of Japan’s evolving national security strategy under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, has faced strong condemnation from China, which views it as provocative. This development reflects Japan’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and its role in the broader Indo-Pacific security architecture amid rising tensions.
