Indian Navy to Use BARC's Compact Reactors for Energy Security at Bases
The Indian Navy is strategically exploring the deployment of compact nuclear reactors developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) to enhance energy security at its naval bases. These small modular reactors (SMRs) aim to provide rapid-response power backup during grid failures, addressing vulnerabilities exposed by recent regional tensions. Current diesel systems, prone to fuel shortages and emissions, would be supplemented by these mobile, tamper-proof reactors, which could restore operational functionality in hours. With a robust cadre of trained reactor technicians and secure designs, the initiative reflects a shift from reactive to proactive resilience, ensuring uninterrupted operations for vital naval assets amid growing threats in the region.
