Indian Army's indigenisation drive boosts self-reliance in defense technology advancements.

The Indian Army has accelerated its indigenisation drive under the Year of Technology Absorption initiative, marking a landmark achievement for defense self-reliance. On November 21, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) officially announced, “The Indian Army has localised over 1,050 spares and more than 60 major assemblies of critical foreign-origin weapon systems, reducing dependency on imports and enhancing operational readiness.” As part of this initiative, 1,035 assemblies and sub-assemblies along with 3,517 spares have been indigenously developed for existing platforms, significantly strengthening supply-chain resilience. Notably, the Army has also achieved 97% indigenisation in Special Clothing and Mountaineering Equipment, vital for high-altitude troops, with the last two items expected by 2026. Advanced technologies—including cryo-coolers, GNSS modules, and indigenous soldier gear—have been fielded in collaboration with Indian industry, MSMEs, and startups. These milestones underscore India’s strategic commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and defense autonomy.
