India launches ambitious destroyer program to enhance naval blue-water capabilities.
India is set to launch an ambitious destroyer program, projected to cost between 70,000 and 80,000 crore (approximately $89 billion), aimed at enhancing its blue-water capabilities. Designated as Project-18 or a follow-on to Project-15C, the initiative will produce advanced stealth destroyers displacing around 10,000 tons, integrating a dense vertical launch system for over 100 missile cells, and incorporating state-of-the-art radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems. This project aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by fostering local manufacturing and technological development, ensuring the Indian Navy’s fleet evolves to meet future operational demands and geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The eight new destroyers will serve as crucial flagships, reinforcing India’s maritime power well into the 2050s.
