Japan's JMSDF launches next-gen offshore patrol vessels for maritime security.
Japan has launched its first two next-generation offshore patrol vessels, Sakura and Tachibana, for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), marking a significant step in its maritime modernization efforts. Constructed by Japan Marine United, these advanced vessels feature enhanced automation, reduced radar visibility, and modular systems, designed for efficient intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations. With a displacement of approximately 1,920 tons and a crew of just 30, they aim to bolster Japan’s capacity to monitor its extensive exclusive economic zone amid increasing maritime activity by China and Russia. This move not only strengthens Japan’s maritime posture but also aligns with its broader defense strategy, reflecting a commitment to regional security cooperation without inflaming tensions in contested waters.
