IAF chief inaugurates Nyoma airbase, boosting defense in Ladakh.
In a significant advancement for India’s defense posture, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has declared the Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh fully operational, marking it as the world’s highest fighter-capable airfield at an altitude of 13,700 feet. Strategically located just 30-35 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, the newly developed airbase features a 2.7-kilometer runway and is equipped to handle fighter jets, helicopters, and transport aircraft. This facility, which cost approximately ₹218 crore and was developed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), enhances India’s rapid deployment capabilities and logistical support in a region characterized by challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions. The operationalization of Nyoma not only strengthens India’s military readiness against potential incursions but also signifies a broader strategic initiative to improve infrastructure along the LAC, thereby serving both military and civilian objectives. The establishment of Nyoma is part of India’s ongoing efforts to enhance border connectivity and national security, particularly following increased tensions with China, and reflects the government’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities in the region.
