IAF revives MiG-21 fighter jets for Heritage Flight program.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has revived the legendary MiG-21 fighter jets as part of its Heritage Flight program, celebrating the aircraft’s iconic legacy. Officially retired on September 26, 2025, after 62 years of distinguished service, the MiG-21 will now join a fleet of vintage aircraft preserved for commemorative events and air shows. This move aims to honor the evolution of Indian military aviation and the MiG-21’s significant role in major conflicts such as the 1965 and 1971 wars, the 1999 Kargil conflict, and the 2019 Balakot airstrike. The jets to be included are being assessed at the Nashik base, with maintenance supported by the fact that the aircraft was license-produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, ensuring availability of spare parts. The Heritage Flight program showcases India’s rich aviation heritage while maintaining these aircraft as flying symbols of valor and technological progress, providing inspiration to future generations and recognizing the MiG-21’s lasting contribution to the nation’s air defense prowess. The program reflects the IAF’s commitment to preserving its historical milestones and technological achievements.
