India's Mission Aero Engine aims for self-reliance in aircraft propulsion.
India is advancing its Mission Aero Engine initiative to achieve technological self-reliance in aircraft propulsion, as outlined in a report by the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM). The initiative aims to develop a fully indigenous 110 kN engine, addressing strategic vulnerabilities posed by reliance on foreign suppliers amid geopolitical risks. With projections indicating a need for 712 engines over the next decade for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and future Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), this move could significantly boost India’s defense manufacturing sector, estimated to be worth over ₹60,000 crores. By fostering a dual-use architecture for military and civilian applications, the program not only underscores India’s commitment to self-sufficiency but also positions it as a competitive player in global aerospace markets.
