DRDO tests specialized food and parachutes for Gaganyaan mission.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed and successfully tested specialized astronaut food and parachute systems for India’s Gaganyaan mission, marking a crucial advancement in preparations for the country’s first human spaceflight scheduled for 2027. Highlighting the synergy between defense and space technologies, DRDO’s Director General Dr. B.K. Das noted that these components underwent rigorous laboratory and field trials with promising outcomes, ensuring astronaut reliance on indigenous systems. Concurrently, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed that about 85-90% of the mission’s subsystem activities are complete, with integrated testing and software validation underway. ISRO plans three uncrewed test flights before the crewed launch to validate safety and system reliability. These developments underscore India’s strategic focus on leveraging defense expertise for space exploration, enhancing its stature in the global aerospace domain, and reinforcing national security through technological self-reliance. The collaboration between DRDO and ISRO symbolizes India’s growing capabilities and ambitions in human spaceflight, set to be a landmark in 2027.
