Indian Navy's LPDs to embrace electric propulsion with MT-30 integration.

The Indian Navy is set to transform its naval capabilities by integrating Rolls-Royce’s MT-30 gas turbines with an advanced full electric propulsion system on its upcoming Landing Platform Docks (LPDs). This marks India’s first large-scale adoption of electric propulsion for warships, aiming for 20% fuel savings, reduced acoustic signature, and enhanced operational efficiency. The US and UK collaborations are instrumental; the UK is jointly developing the Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) system, with India establishing a maritime land-based testing facility. The LPDs, valued at around 33,000 crore rupees, will feature versatile roles, including troop transport and humanitarian missions, while bolstering regional security against threats like China’s PLA Navy. These developments align with India’s broader naval modernization and indigenous defense initiatives, emphasizing energy efficiency, self-reliance, and regional partnerships to counterbalance China’s expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific.
