Geopolitics and Security Alliances

Pakistan and Bangladesh boost defense ties, raising India's security concerns.

In a significant development, Pakistan and Bangladesh have enhanced their defense cooperation following high-level military discussions in Dhaka, which emphasized joint training, combined exercises, and counter-terrorism collaboration. This shift in Bangladesh’s foreign policy, moving closer to Pakistan, raises concerns for India, particularly regarding security along the 4,000 km Indo-Bangladesh border and the potential for increased extremist activities. Observers have noted the implications of a Pakistan-Bangladesh alliance, possibly supported by China, which could lead to strategic encirclement of India, especially in the Bay of Bengal. India’s Chief of Defence Staff has cautioned that strengthened trilateral ties among Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China could pose serious threats to regional security.
