Austrian group files complaint against Clearview AI for privacy violations.

An Austrian privacy group, noyb, has lodged a criminal complaint against Clearview AI, alleging violations of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by unlawfully collecting photos and videos of EU residents for its facial-recognition database. This action follows Clearview’s prior breaches of GDPR in multiple EU countries, leading to fines exceeding 100 million euros. The complaint aims to establish a precedent for criminal accountability in GDPR violations, particularly targeting non-EU firms handling European biometric data. This case may increase scrutiny on foreign entities operating in the EU and highlights the ongoing tension between privacy rights and surveillance technologies, emphasizing the need for robust enforcement mechanisms to protect individual privacy in an increasingly digital world.
