Haryana Court Denies Bail to YouTuber in Espionage Case, Citing Security Risks
On October 23, 2025, a court in Hisar, Haryana, decisively denied bail to YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested on May 16 under suspicion of espionage and charged under the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The court, led by Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Parminder Kaur, cited substantial forensic evidence from Malhotra’s electronic devices and intelligence inputs from the Subsidiary Multi-Agency Centre, establishing her connections with a Pakistani High Commission official, identified as Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish. Investigations revealed Malhotra’s repeated visits to Pakistan in 2023, during which she allegedly met Pakistani intelligence operatives. The court stressed that her release could impede probe progress, risk evidence tampering, and compromise public interest and national security. Despite defense arguments about the lack of direct transmission evidence, the court maintained that the gravity of the case and national security interests outweighed her bail plea. This ruling highlights India’s stringent approach to safeguarding sovereignty against espionage threats, underscoring the judiciary’s commitment to prioritizing national security above individual circumstances. Malhotra remains in judicial custody amid ongoing investigations.
