Rohingyas leave illegal Jammu settlement after utilities cut off.
Authorities in Jammu have reported that around 30 to 40 Rohingya refugees have vacated an illegal settlement near Nideesh Enclave in the Channi Rama area after electricity and water supplies were disconnected. The Jammu administration ordered the utility cuts following complaints from local residents, particularly the Nideesh Enclave Residents’ Welfare Association, citing law and order issues, frequent disturbances, hygiene concerns, and unauthorized occupation of land owned by a resident from Rajouri district. Police intervened in late October 2025, instructing the refugees to leave; many expressed uncertainty about their next steps, with police indicating they would be taken to a holding center at Kathua jail. This eviction aligns with a pattern of enforcement actions seen since 2021, including a similar operation in December 2024. Jammu and Kashmir houses over 13,700 foreigners, mostly Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, raising complex challenges involving national security, refugee rights, and local governance. Human rights advocates criticize these measures as part of a broader campaign of intimidation against Rohingyas in the region, deepening the humanitarian crisis amid ongoing tensions.
