South Korea launches advanced submarine to enhance deterrence against North Korea.
South Korea has launched its most advanced submarine, the 3,600-ton ROKS Jang Yeong-sil, as part of its Changbogo-III Batch-II class, enhancing its underwater deterrence capabilities against North Korean threats. The submarine features advanced detection and strike technologies, including lithium-ion batteries for extended underwater endurance, improved stealth systems, and up to ten vertical missile launch tubes for submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Scheduled for delivery by 2027, this vessel is integral to South Korea’s maritime “three-axis” deterrence strategy, coinciding with rising regional security challenges. This development not only underscores South Korea’s ambitions as a defense exporter but also aligns with India’s strategic focus on deterrence and multipolar security, highlighting the interconnected nature of regional defense dynamics.
