PLAAF Shifts from PL-15 to PL-16 After India's Sindoor Operation Insights

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) is reportedly shifting its focus from the PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) to the new PL-16, capable of better integration with stealth platforms like the J-20. This change follows India’s Operation Sindoor, where captured PL-15E missiles from downed Pakistani jets allowed Indian forces to analyze their technologies. Analysts suggest this move aims to address vulnerabilities exposed by India’s electronic warfare capabilities, as the PL-15E demonstrated significant failure rates. The PL-16’s streamlined design and enhanced range potentially bolster China’s air capabilities, but the reliance on older models highlights a transitional gap that may affect the PLAAF’s operational readiness amidst growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
