Centre seeks SC clarification on gender-neutral hiring for armed forces.

The Indian Centre has requested the Supreme Court to clarify that its August judgment mandating gender-neutral recruitment applies only to the Army’s Judge Advocate General (JAG) branch, not extending to other services within the Indian Armed Forces. The Centre argues that the ruling, which includes a 50% reservation for women, contradicts the principles of meritocracy and could lead to the exclusion of more qualified male candidates, thereby impacting operational efficiency. This legal debate highlights the tension between gender equality and the imperative of maintaining high standards within the military, reflecting broader societal discussions on gender roles in traditionally male-dominated fields. The outcome could set a precedent influencing future recruitment policies across the Indian defense services.
