Germany Orders 20 New Eurofighters to Modernize Air Force

Germany has finalized a €3.75 billion contract with Airbus for 20 advanced Tranche 5 Eurofighter jets, approved by the Bundestag budget committee on October 8, 2025, and formally signed on October 15. These aircraft, set for delivery between 2031 and 2034, will be assembled at Airbus’s Manching facility near Munich and equipped with the E-Scan AESA radar and Saab’s Arexis electronic warfare suite. The acquisition strengthens Germany’s air superiority and electronic combat capabilities, replacing retiring Tornado ECR aircraft and supporting NATO commitments. As part of a broader modernization strategy, the Tranche 5 jets will serve as a technological bridge to the sixth-generation Future Combat Air System (FCAS), expected around 2040, and are projected to remain in service until the 2060s.
