Philippines Expands Security Ties in Indo-Pacific for Broader Deterrence Network

The Philippines is actively broadening its security framework in the Indo-Pacific by establishing a “web of deterrence” that extends beyond its longstanding alliance with the United States. This multidimensional strategy includes enhanced cooperation with Japan, Australia, India, Vietnam, European nations, and others, involving joint patrols, military exercises, and information sharing to address escalating security challenges, particularly China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea. In 2025, Manila has strengthened defense ties with India through bilateral agreements focusing on maritime domain awareness, joint training, and defense technology collaboration, highlighted by the India-Philippines Maritime Dialogue initiated in late 2024. The U.S.-Philippines military partnership also remains robust, with commitments under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty and ongoing joint exercises like Balikatan. Moreover, the Philippines is expanding defense pacts with Germany, New Zealand, Japan, and pursuing agreements with Canada and France, signifying a diversified strategic approach combining diplomacy and deterrence to safeguard regional stability and maritime freedom. These efforts reflect Manila’s shifting focus from internal to external security threats amid rising regional tensions
