Navy chief warns of rising cyber threats to maritime security and trade.

At a recent seminar on maritime cybersecurity, Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi emphasized the increasing vulnerabilities in India’s maritime domain due to rapid digital transformation, warning that cyber disruptions could have massive implications for national security and global trade. With over 11,000 km of coastline and 13 major ports, Admiral Tripathi pointed out that a cyberattack in this sector could disrupt supply chains and destabilize international relations, as evidenced by significant global incidents like the Suez Canal blockage and cyberattacks targeting major shipping operations. Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada reiterated the importance of the maritime sector, noting that 95% of India’s trade by volume passes through its ports, thereby underscoring the need for robust cyber defenses. Discussions highlighted the necessity for a centralized framework or a dedicated Maritime CERT to enhance cyber preparedness and address persistent gaps in security protocols. This development is significant as it reflects India’s commitment to fortifying its maritime infrastructure against evolving cyber threats, aligning national security with economic interests, and playing a vital role in maintaining global trade stability.
