Indian Navy plans to replace AK-630 with DRDO's 300kW Surya laser system.

The Indian Navy is focusing on incorporating futuristic Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) systems to replace the Soviet-era AK-630 close-in weapon systems, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) 300kW Surya laser as a key candidate. This transition aims to modernize naval defense against evolving aerial threats, including drones and hypersonic missiles. DEWs offer advantages such as unlimited ammunition, cost-effectiveness, and reduced collateral damage, enabling precision engagement at the speed of light. While the full integration of the Surya system is expected to unfold over a decade, this initiative aligns India with global naval powers investing in advanced military technologies, thereby enhancing deterrence in the Indian Ocean Region amidst rising regional threats.
