Russia is reviving its partnership with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to propose the Ilyushin IL-276 medium transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) long-awaited Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) program, with a Request for Proposal expected soon. The collaboration, originating in 2008, faced setbacks over engine choices but is now reportedly incorporating a FADEC-enabled engine co-developed with India’s GTRE, addressing IAF’s requirements for advanced avionics. The IL-276, with its short takeoff and landing capabilities, aligns with IAF’s operational needs, potentially fitting well within the competitive landscape against other bidders. This development is significant, reflecting improved Indo-Russian relations post-Ukraine conflict and offering HAL an opportunity to diversify and strengthen its transport capabilities amidst ongoing modernization efforts.
