Indian Army Fast-Tracks Gatling Autocannon for Air Defense

In response to the challenges exposed during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army is accelerating the development of the Armament Research and Development Establishment’s (ARDE) land-based Gatling autocannon project, aimed at enhancing its air defense capabilities. This system, designed as a close-in weapon system (CIWS) to counter threats such as drones and low-flying missiles, will employ advanced technologies, including AI-driven target acquisition and high mobility for rapid deployment. With a firing rate of up to 4,500 rounds per minute, it seeks to neutralize various aerial threats during terminal phases of engagement. This initiative underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, reinforcing its strategic posture amid evolving regional security dynamics.
