AFSPA Extended in Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh for 6 Months
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been extended for six months across various regions in Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh due to ongoing law and order concerns. In Manipur, the law will remain in effect barring certain police station areas, following a history of ethnic violence that has claimed over 260 lives since May 2023. Meanwhile, similar extensions are declared in nine districts of Nagaland and specific districts in Arunachal Pradesh. While AFSPA is often criticized for its stringent provisions, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that it has been revoked in 70% of northeastern areas, indicating a gradual approach towards normalization in a region historically affected by unrest. The developments underscore the delicate balance between security needs and civil rights in volatile regions.
