Zorawar Light Tank to Get Indigenous 800HP Engine Upgrade
The Zorawar light tank, India’s indigenous high-altitude armored platform, is set to receive a significant upgrade with an 800HP indigenous engine and local transmission, replacing the current Cummins powertrain. This initiative, part of India’s self-reliance strategy in defense manufacturing, aims to enhance operational sovereignty and address supply chain vulnerabilities. The transition to a more powerful engine will improve the tank’s performance in challenging terrains, facilitating its adaptability for various military scenarios. The Indian Army plans to initially procure 54 units with the existing engine while preparing for a future order of 300-400 tanks equipped with the new powertrain, positioning the Zorawar as a critical asset amidst ongoing regional tensions and the need for robust defense capabilities.
