Centre tells Supreme Court: No bias in women's SSC commissions
The Indian government has asserted to the Supreme Court that there is no discrimination in granting permanent commissions to women officers in the Short Service Commission (SSC) of the Army, countering claims made by women officers who have participated in critical operations. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati emphasized that selection criteria are gender-neutral and based on merit, with annual confidential reports evaluated without bias. Despite contentions regarding the consideration of difficult postings, the Centre maintains that selection boards operate without knowledge of officers’ identities. The Supreme Court bench expressed concerns regarding the selection policy’s fairness, highlighting discrepancies in grading among candidates. This case underscores ongoing discussions about gender equality and representation in the Indian Armed Forces, particularly in leadership roles.
