UN Chief Calls Palestinian Statehood a Fundamental Right

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that Palestinian statehood is a fundamental right, emphasizing the necessity of a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders. The UN General Assembly’s recent resolution, supported by 142 countries including India, aims to revitalize this framework amid ongoing deadlock in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. France and other Western nations have recognized Palestine, framing it as crucial for regional peace and a counter to extremism, a move that has drawn criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who views such recognitions as rewarding terrorism. This geopolitical shift highlights a growing international consensus on Palestinian statehood, potentially increasing pressure on Israel while intensifying tensions in the region.
