AVNL Pursues BMP-2 Export Deal with Nigeria and Tanzania

India’s Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL) is advancing negotiations with Nigeria and Tanzania to supply 30-40 BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, enhancing India’s defense export profile. The BMP-2, known as Sarath in Indian service, boasts amphibious capabilities and modern upgrades, achieving over 98.5% indigenization. This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts against Boko Haram and Tanzania’s border security needs, providing a cost-effective alternative to Russian imports amid global supply chain challenges. The potential deal underscores India’s growing defense relationships in Africa and its commitment to supporting allied nations with reliable military equipment, further solidifying its status as a defense manufacturing hub.
