Indian Army halts Sharang artillery induction over quality defects

The Indian Army has halted the induction of Sharang artillery guns due to significant quality issues identified in the components manufactured by the defense PSU, Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL). Initial upgrades of 159 Soviet-era guns have revealed serious mechanical and metallurgical defects, particularly concerning faulty muzzle brakes sourced from a private vendor, which jeopardizes both operational effectiveness and personnel safety. This setback comes amid ongoing regional security challenges and has prompted calls for accountability within the defense establishment, which reflects broader concerns regarding the indigenisation efforts in military hardware. The Army’s stringent quality requirements underline the necessity for reliable domestic manufacturing to enhance combat readiness and operational integrity.
