India's 100 GW Nuclear Plan: Large Reactors as Core, SMRs as Support

India plans to expand its nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047, with state-owned NPCIL and NTPC leading the charge to provide 80 GW through large reactors and allowing private participation for the remaining 20 GW via Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Large reactors, particularly the Jaitapur project which will produce 10,380 MW, are crucial for meeting the country’s urgent energy demands and climate commitments, offering stable baseload power. While SMRs are recognized for their scalability, India’s energy strategy emphasizes large reactors to swiftly bridge the capacity gap, positioning nuclear energy as a pivotal element in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
