Indian Navy to Develop Indigenous CIWS with AAA Guns and VSHORAD
The Indian Navy is advancing plans to develop an indigenous Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) that integrates anti-aircraft artillery with Very Short-Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) missiles to enhance ship defense against modern threats like drones and sea-skimming missiles. This hybrid system, aimed at reducing import dependencies, will feature advanced radar and sensors and is part of the Navy’s 15-year technology roadmap. With an estimated procurement cost of ₹5,000-7,000 crore for over 30 units, initial clearance is expected by late 2025, and prototypes are set for trials by 2027, aligning with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and enhancing self-reliance in naval capabilities.
