Tejas Mk-1A with Astra Missiles Set to Join IAF Next Month
The Tejas Mk-1A fighter jet, equipped with Astra missiles and laser-guided bombs, is set to enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) capabilities and strengthen India’s defense self-reliance. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) plans to deliver the first two upgraded jets in October, contingent on successful weapon trials scheduled for this month. The integration of advanced weaponry with the Elta ELM-2052 radar and General Electric engines is crucial, following previous technical challenges. With the IAF’s squadron strength decreasing due to the retirement of older MiG-21 jets, the addition of the Tejas Mk-1A and the recent sanctioning of 97 more jets reflect a strategic move to modernize and expand India’s aerial combat capacity.
