Indian Army to Acquire 3,000 Vehicle-Mounted Mortar Systems

The Indian Army plans to procure 3,000 Vehicle-Mounted Infantry Mortar Systems (VMIMS) to enhance rapid-response firepower, addressing evolving battlefield requirements against threats from Pakistan and China. These systems, capable of deploying in under three minutes, will improve mobility and effectiveness in artillery operations, crucial for countering modern threats like drones and missiles. The initiative aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing indigenous production, with local firms expected to compete for contracts. The Army’s approach reflects a commitment to modernizing its capabilities while fostering domestic defense manufacturing, showcased by the successful initial acquisition of 50 VMIMS units from Mahindra Defence Systems.
