Army Chief Dwivedi visits Algeria, enhancing defense ties.

India’s Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, embarked on his first overseas visit to Algeria following Operation Sindoor, emphasizing the strengthening of defense ties between India and Algeria. During his visit, he interacted with top military officials, including discussions on senior officer training exchanges, joint capability development, and defense-industrial cooperation, particularly in areas like anti-drone technologies. General Dwivedi praised the professionalism of Algerian military institutions, notably the School of Command and Major Staff and the Cherchell Military Academy, expressing a desire for future collaborative training and modernization efforts, given that Algeria’s armed forces operate on systems similar to India’s. This visit is significant for New Delhi as Algeria is a strategic partner in the energy-rich Maghreb-Sahel region and aligns with India’s broader Africa outreach, underscored by shared interests in counter-terrorism. Algeria’s recent pivot to diversify its defense partnerships, reducing reliance on traditional allies like Russia, further underscores the importance of India’s engagement, which is reflected in the backdrop of increasing defense spending and modernization efforts in Algeria. Overall, General Dwivedi’s visit sets a promising foundation for enduring army-to-army cooperation and the exchange of best practices.
