India to Develop Space-Based Interceptors for Missile Defense

India is advancing its missile defense capabilities through the Sudarshan Chakra program, which focuses on developing space-based interceptors for boost-phase missile interception. This innovative approach aims to neutralize hostile ballistic missiles during their initial launch phase, significantly enhancing kill probabilities and reducing warhead dispersion risks. Leveraging advanced sensor networks and integrating multi-domain intelligence, the program builds on existing technologies like the DRDO’s long-range surface-to-air missiles, setting a completion target for 2028-29. The initiative positions India alongside leading nations in space-based missile defense, crucial for countering threats from adversaries such as China and Pakistan, and reflects a significant evolution in India’s air warfare strategy.
