CDS asserts openness will resolve military divergence on tri-services commands.

The recent discussions at the Ran Samvad seminar highlighted the ongoing divergence among India’s military leadership regarding the planned theaterisation of tri-services commands, aimed at enhancing joint operations between the Army, Air Force, and Navy. Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan emphasized the need for openness in addressing these differences, while acknowledging that the final decisions would be made in the nation’s best interest. The Air Chief Marshal expressed concerns that dividing air assets into multiple commands could hinder operational efficiency, advocating for a centralized joint planning and coordination center. In contrast, the Navy Chief reaffirmed support for the theaterisation plan, which intends to integrate capabilities across services for better resource utilization. Gen Chauhan recognized the importance of listening to diverse viewpoints among the services and veterans, suggesting that the discourse is a positive sign towards achieving jointness. He also noted that the theaterisation initiative, initially proposed in 2019, has faced delays and must be expedited to close existing operational gaps. The emphasis on collaborative dialogue reflects a necessary shift towards a unified military strategy that ultimately serves India’s security needs more effectively.
