IAF to Acquire 50 More C-295M Aircraft for Tactical Airlift
The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to enhance its tactical airlift capabilities by procuring an additional 50 Airbus C-295M transport aircraft, complementing a previous order of 56, totaling 106. This strategic initiative aims to phase out the aging Antonov An-32 fleet, with retirement starting in 2031-32 due to rising maintenance costs. The IAF is also redefining its Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) requirements, preparing a separate tender for 70-80 larger aircraft capable of carrying 40-ton payloads to replace the larger Ilyushin Il-76. This focus on modern aircraft aligns with the “Make in India” initiative, promoting local production and enhancing operational readiness across diverse terrains.
