India Approves 97 More TEJAS MK-1A Jets, Totaling 180 Units

India’s Ministry of Defence has approved the acquisition of an additional 97 indigenous TEJAS MK-1A fighter jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), bringing the total order to 180 units, valued at approximately ₹66,500 crore. This decision comes as part of India’s strategy to modernize its air combat capabilities and phase out the aging fleet of MiG-21 aircraft, addressing a critical reduction in the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat squadrons, which are projected to drop to 29. The TEJAS MK-1A features several enhancements over its predecessor, including advanced avionics and increased indigenous content, aimed at bolstering India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing. However, production delays primarily due to engine supply issues from General Electric pose challenges; only two engines have been delivered thus far, with HAL working to ramp up production capacity to meet increasing demands. Additionally, the acquisition of six advanced Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft is set to further enhance India’s surveillance capabilities, crucial for countering threats from China and Pakistan. While the strategic significance of these acquisitions is clear, the successful execution of these projects hinges on HAL’s ability to resolve supply chain bottlenecks and deliver the required aircraft timely. Overall, this move not only strengthens India’s defense posture amid regional challenges but also reinforces the government’s commitment to the “Make in India” initiative, fostering a robust indigenous defense industry.
