Russia's nuclear chief calls for shield upgrades amid global threats

Russia’s nuclear chief, Alexei Likhachev, emphasized the need to strengthen Russia’s nuclear shield in response to “colossal threats” from evolving global dynamics, particularly citing advancements in nuclear capabilities by the U.S. and China. As both the U.S. and Russia enhance their arsenals, the U.S. is also developing a $175 billion missile defense system aimed at intercepting various missile types, though experts assert that no system can guarantee complete interception. In the global nuclear landscape, while Russia and the U.S. hold the majority of nuclear warheads, India’s strategic stockpile of 180 warheads positions it as a key player, reinforcing its stance on national security amidst these developments.
