India to Start Manufacturing Next-Gen S5-Class SSBNs by 2027

India is set to commence the manufacturing of the next-generation S5-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) by 2027, following the completion of the S4 series. The S5-class will enhance India’s sea-based nuclear deterrent with a larger displacement of 12,000 to 13,500 tonnes, a powerful 190 MW reactor, and the capability to carry 12-16 advanced K-5 and K-6 submarine-launched missiles with MIRV technology. This development marks a significant leap in India’s strategic deterrence, promising improved patrol endurance, strike range, and survivability, ensuring India’s credible second-strike capability against any adversary by the early 2030s.
