Cheetah and Chetak Helicopters to Remain Operational for 10 More Years Amid RFI for 200 Light Utility Helicopters

The Indian government has initiated a Request for Information (RFI) for 200 light utility helicopters to eventually replace the aging Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which are expected to remain operational for another decade despite being considered outdated. The Cheetah and Chetak have been vital for high-altitude operations and will continue to serve as the backbone of India’s light helicopter fleet while newer platforms like HAL’s Light Utility Helicopter are introduced. This phased replacement strategy underscores a balanced approach to maintaining operational readiness while modernizing the fleet, reflecting India’s commitment to ensuring its defense capabilities remain robust amidst evolving requirements.
