India Halts Operation Sindoor: Insights from Ex-Defense Adviser

Recent discussions surrounding Operation Sindoor highlight its strategic implications in the context of India-Pakistan relations. Retired Lieutenant General Vinod Khandare explained that the operation was a response to Pakistan’s failure to curb terrorism on its soil, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack. He emphasized the importance of self-reliance, or Atmanirbharta, in contemporary defense strategies, especially given the changing dynamics of modern warfare and cyber threats. Khandare argued against escalating the conflict further, stating that occupying Pakistan-occupied Kashmir could create significant long-term challenges for India, potentially leading to a “new monster” of conflict. He reiterated that military action, while sometimes necessary, comes with substantial financial burdens, urging a balance between military might and national development goals. He also acknowledged India’s advancements in high-tech warfare capabilities during the conflict, underscoring the need for innovation in defense while maintaining a focus on economic and industrial growth. This perspective reinforces India’s commitment to a prudent and balanced approach in dealing with its geopolitical challenges, ensuring both security and development aspirations are met.
