Korean Air and LIG Nex1 to Bid for South Korea's EW Aircraft Project

Korean Air has partnered with defense firm LIG Nex1 to bid on the Republic of Korea Air Force’s Block-I electronic warfare aircraft development project, valued at 1.78 trillion won ($1.3 billion), with proposals due in early September 2025. The initiative, approved in April 2023 and set for completion by 2034, involves modifying Bombardier Global 6500 jets into platforms for gathering electronic intelligence in peacetime and jamming enemy radars and communications during conflicts, particularly against North Korean threats. Korean Air will handle system integration and aircraft modifications, while LIG Nex1 develops the EW equipment, drawing on its experience with systems like those for the KF-21 fighter. Rivals include a consortium of Korea Aerospace Industries and Hanwha Systems, highlighting South Korea’s push for indigenous defense technology to enhance military readiness and potential global exports.
