India set to finalize two major submarine deals to boost naval power.

India is poised to finalize two significant submarine deals, totaling over Rs one lakh crore, aimed at enhancing its undersea warfare capabilities in light of China’s growing naval strength. The first deal concerns the procurement of three Scorpene submarines, which will be jointly produced by state-run Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and the French firm Naval Group, with negotiations for this nearly Rs 36,000 crore project reportedly nearing completion after previous delays. The second deal involves acquiring six diesel-electric stealth submarines, estimated at around Rs 65,000 crore, with the German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems partnered with MDL. Both projects, part of India’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative, are expected to be finalized by mid-next year, although the delivery timelines will begin approximately six years post-contract signing. The Indian Navy’s urgency in operationalizing these contracts underscores its strategic need to bolster underwater capabilities amid regional security challenges. Overall, these developments reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its defense infrastructure while fostering international collaborations to enhance indigenous production capabilities.
