HAL Confirms GaN Uttam AESA Radar for 97 Tejas Mk1A Jets
In a significant enhancement of India’s indigenous defense capabilities, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) confirmed the integration of the advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar into 97 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets starting post-2027. This upgrade from the previous Gallium Arsenide (GaS)-based radar will significantly improve the aircraft’s situational awareness, target tracking, and engagement capabilities, offering enhanced performance against modern air defense systems. The GaN technology promises higher power efficiency and improved radar range, critical for air superiority and multi-role operations. This development not only reinforces India’s self-reliance in defense technology but also positions the country as a potential exporter of advanced radar systems, showcasing its growing prowess in military electronics and radar manufacturing.
